Breast Cancer Awareness Interview with Laura Gentles Miss Diamond Curve SE London 2021/22

Can you introduce yourself?

I'm Laura Gentles, aged 33 from Durham but living in London. I am currently Miss Diamond Curve SE London 2021/22

Why did you choose your platform of breast cancer? Or How has breast cancer affected you?

Breast Cancer is something that has affected me deeply. My mam was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2019, and this progressed to stage 3 and then stage 4. She was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer which is much lesser known. We sadly lost her on 1st September 2021.

Why is raising awareness of breast cancer so important?

Over the last two years I have completed Dry January, raised funds through three Pretty Muddy Race for Life (one coming up next month.) I also founded and direct an online pet pageant, Magnificent Creatures with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK. All the above funds I receive, I direct to the breast cancer area of Cancer research UK.

I have taken part in sister Queens video and photo campaigns to raise awareness for breast cancer. I collected donated items for "Hug in a bag" charity which donates care packages to breast cancer patients upon diagnosis. I also share facts and stats to my social media pages.

Why is raising awareness of breast cancer so important?

I think there's a common misconception that breast cancer isn't that serious, and that everyone survives. I know I thought this prior to my mams diagnosis. It is something we can all check for in our routine, once a week in the shower is enough. My mam missed the signs, and she paid the ultimate price. I don't want anyone else to suffer unnecessarily when we can make small changes that make a big difference.

Is there a particular charity you support in regards to breast cancer?

When donating to Cancer Research UK through the website, there is an option to choose which area of cancer the funds will go to. I always choose breast cancer. I also know coppafeel do some wonderful work and have some brilliant resources in place.
